Just a little info about “felting” your wool felt. Generally wool felt comes as wool/nylon blends. The wools I have purchased in the past varied any where from 65% wool/35% nylon to 80 % wool/20 % nylon. The more wool in the blend, the more textured it becomes with felting.( You can buy 100% wool felt, but it is more costly, and the blends work great. So for me it is not worth the xtra cost.)
This is a sample of the difference between “felted” wool felt and “non-felted” wool felt.
The smoother bottom swatch has not been felted.
I really like the look of the textured finish of the “felted” wool felt, therefore usually use the felting technique.
When I first learned how to “felt” wool felt, the instructions were to hand wash in hot water with soap.
Well, I was not about to hand wash anything, when I had a lovely washing machine that could do it for me!
So I wash the wool felt on the shortest gentle cycle, that my washing machine offers, using hot water and Wool Lite.
Then place in the dryer, but don’t allow the felt to fully dry, pull it out of the dryer when it is just damp. Lay it flat to finish drying. If you forget, and it fully dries in dryer, no need to panic. It just tends to crease up more. Lightly steam iron the creases out.
